"My name is Carlos and I was born on 27 th december 1978. There are four people in my house, my mother, my father, my brother and me. Both of my parents work, my mother in a tourist agency. My brother is still studying and I have worked in Wayquis Peru since its beginning.. I met Marjan while I was on the street and she told me about her project. I was one of the first three young people chosen to work in the project. In the mornings I make handicrafts
In february 2004 I did a course in how to make photo albums and notebooks, which I liked very much.
Before working in Wayquis Peru, I studied in Don Jose de San Martin, which is an institute for handicapped people. Here, I met many people.
Since I was born I have never been able to hear so because of this I cannot speak
On 10 th of may 2003 I married Noelia and now we live together. Noelia also works in Wayquis Peru.
In my spare time I like to play football and use computers. Every Saturday I play football and my dream is that one day I will become a famous footballer."
Carlso lives with his wife Noelia and his parents. They have their own apartment and are looked after well by Carlos' parents
Mercedes Villegas Gutierrez: partially deaf

"My name is Mercedes and I was born on 24 th of september 1985. I don't have any parents. My father died in a car accident before I was born and my mother died while she was giving birth to me. I have 4 brothers one of which is also partially deaf. Now I live with my aunt and uncle and my cousins. I studied in Don Jose de San Martin.
My friend Jennifer told me about Wayquis Peru and I wanted to work there aswell. At the beginning of 2002 there was a vacancy in the project which allowed me to start working at Wayquis Peru.
In february 2004 I did a yogurt and cheese making course. I also make handicrafts in the mornings.
In the afternoons I work in textiles which I really like.
Because of a trauma when I was 5 years old, I can't hear very well. With the help of headphones I can hear a lot better.
My hobbies are playing basketball and dancing. My dream is to be a professional worker.
"
Mercedes has lived with her aunt and uncle ever since her parents died. They treat her as if she were their own child. Mercedes' family are very poor. The house has an aluminium roof and the whole familly live in one room. They don't have a toilet or a shower, so they all wash in one basin. Mercedes can use the bathroom in Wayquis Peru twice a week when she comes to work.
Jennifer Asencio Arqque: partially deaf

"My name is Jennifer and I was born on 16 th of december 1986. In my family there are 8 people, my mother my father and my brothers and sisters. I love my family very much and I love being with them. Of course, at times, there are problems, but thankfully not many!
My father works in construction and my mother makes men's clothes. Both my sister and I work in Wayquis Peru. My other brothers and sisters are still studying. I studied in San Francisco de Asis and then in Uriel Garcia. In 2003 i finished school. I found out about Wayquis Peru through my sister, Celia, who brought me here.
In february 2004 I did a yogurt and cheese making course and I liked it very much especially the theory. I would love to be a nurse but because of my disability it's not possible. At the moment I'm studying to be a laboratory technician.. I try to work as much as I can in Wayquis Peru but at times it's not possible because of my studies
When I was 6 years old I was in a car accident and lost part of my hearing. I my spare time I like to play basketball and dance)."
Jennifer lives with all of her family who love her very much. Her mother supports Wayquis Peru by selling yogurt and manjar. Her family doesn't have enough money to enable the children to go to the doctor. However, with donations we could help her with this.
Julio Cesar Faichin Ludina: Deaf

"My name is Julio and I was born on 15 th of july 1984. When I was born my parents abandoned me and I lived in an orphanage.. When they discovered that I was deaf, I went to San Francisco de Asis. I grew up here but I didn't like it. All the children in this school had problems with their hearing and at the weekends some parents came to collect them. Nobody ever came to collect me because I have no family and I felt sad because I never experienced what a family is like. When I was very young I escaped from this school, and so had to do everything on my own. For example finding food, a room to live.
In september 2003 my friend Celia told me that Wayquis Peru were looking for people to help temporarily with the making of Christmas cards. During these 2 months I worked when they needed me. It was a shame that the work finished in november 2003. Happily, in January there was a vacancy at Wayquis Peru because one person didn't respect the work.
In February 2004 I did a course in how to make photo albums and note books, with Celia and Carlos. This course was very interesting and I hope that it will help me a lot in the future.
I don't know if I was born deaf or if it happened for another reason."
Julio does't have any family and he lives quite far from the centre of Cuzco. Julio cannot use the bathroom where he lives because they charge him a lot of money, so twice a week he uses the bathroom at the foundation when he comes to work. Sometimes Julio eats dinner with Marjan and Igor or Cristina in order to give him a family environment
Celia Lucia Asencio Arqque: partially deaf

"My name is Celia and I was born on 9 th of November 1983. There are 8 people in my family. We all live together which I like very much. Both my mother and father work and my sister Jennifer, works at Wayquis Peru in the mornings. I have worked at Wayquis Peru since its beginning after I had finished school. I'm very happy that through donations this project is working and that people in other countries are helping us to achieve a better life. It is very difficult to find work in Cuzco especially for handicapped people because of discrimination.
In February 2004 I did courses in how to make photo albums and notebooks , and also yogurt and cheese making.
When I was 2 years old, I fell out of my cot, and because of this, I'm deaf.
I can't remember what it is like to hear."
Celia lives with her sister Jennifer and the rest of her family. Her mother supports Wayquis Peru by selling yogurt and manjar. Her family doesn't have enough money to enable the children to go to the doctor. However, with donations we could help her with this
Jennifer Noelia Zelaya Condori: Deaf

"My name is Noelia and I was borrn on 7th of July 1981. Carlos and I have been married since 10 th of May 2003. I studied in San Francisco de Asis and in San Martin.. My father died in 2001 and my mother doesn't live in Cusco.. I have four brothers and sisters. I'm completely deaf.
I have worked for Wayquis Peru since September 2001 when Carlos introduced me to the project. In February 2004 I did a yogurt and cheese making course.
At the moment I work in the afternoons doing handicrafts and when it's necessary, I work in the mornings making yogurt, manjar and jam."
Noelia lives with Carlos and her inlaws. They both receive much love and Noelia's mother and father in law treat her like their daughter
Cristian Gamarra Oquemdo: intellectual limitation

"My name is Cristian and I was born on 20 th of December 1987. I live with my mother and I have 1 sister and 3 brothers.. My father lives and works in Brasil. When I was 5 years old I was in a car accident and was in a coma. This is the reason that I'm handicapped
I have worked for Wayquis Peru since 12 of July 2004, when my school San Martin, put me in contact.
Now I work in the shop, and I hope everything continues going well so that I can work in the future.
I was baptised into the Catholic religion when I was two years old and now I go to church every Sunday.
I like to draw, dance and do yoga. I like to learn new things and I like to help my friends when they need it. I like to behave well. I don't have a girlfriend because I don't have time because of my studies. My favourite dessert is ricepudding.
Normally I go to bed at 11, but before doing so, I like to thank God for everything he has given me."
Cristian's familial situation is difficult. His mother is an alcoholic and doesn't give any love or warmth to Cristian. With his brothers and sisters Cristian has to try to survive. Cristian doesn't receive anymore than the necessary amount of food. Cristian is always the first to arrive at work because he doesn't like to be at home. He's only allowed to shower once a week at his home, but at the foundation he can use the bathroom whenever he needs to.
Members:
Igor Osorio Cornejo: Member of the board in Peru

"My name is Igor and I was born on 4 th of January 1971. I have been supporting Wayquis Peru since January 2004 and since July 2004 I have been working part time. Together with Cristina, I help Marjan when and where necessary. Before I knew about the project, I had never thought so much about the situation of handicapped people. I really like my work.
Also like to work in tourism and to learn languages. Aswell as speaking Spanish, I also speak English, French and I'm learning Dutch. In my spare time, I like to listen to music and watch football."
Marjan Schamp: Member of the board in Peru en Nederland

"My name is Marjan and I was born on 31 st of December 1976. I founded Wayquis Peru on 23 rd of July 2001. It's very important to do something for the handicapped people in Peru. I stayed in Peru after doing a period of voluntary work here.
Peru is a beautiful country with nice people, but it's a shame that there is still so much poverty. A part of my studies was food production and because of this I'm pleased that we have now started making yogurt and jam.
In Holland, I did a lot of voluntary work with handicapped people."
Cristina Fernandez Baca: Member of the board in Peru
"My name is Cristina and I was born on 29 th of June in Cusco. I have been a member of the foundation since September 2002. I have three sons.
Since 1997 I have been a “mother” for many foreigeners who come to Peru to learn Spanish. I like this job very much because it allows me to learn a lot about the customs, the culture, and the lifestyle of other people. I don't know why, but generally more Dutch people come than any other nation. Through this work I met Marjan and found out about her project with handicapped people in Cusco.
I really liked her initiative, and so decided to help her when and where necessary.
I know that this should be the work of the Peruvian government but it's a real shame that they don't do anything. I have met many people who do voluntary work like this and it has encouraged me to do the same. I love this work because I'm helping fellow Peruvians without the need for material payment. This work gives me a lot of satisfaction."
