Home - Wayquis Peru

Wayquis Peru is a trust which has been set up in Cusco, Peru for handicapped young people of 16 years and older. Wayquis means “friends” in Quechua, the second language in Peru.

Why Wayquis Peru?

Wayquis Peru is for handicapped young people. In Peru a handicapped person is not considered to be of full value. Unfortunately, discrimination of the handicapped occurs frequently. The parents of handicapped children often do not know how to deal with their children. There is no money for any medicine that may be required or for treatment by a doctor, which means that the child's situation can only deteriorate. Children are often left to fend for themselves and do not get the opportunity to go to school in order to develop. Very often there are no special facilities or aids which the handicapped child needs.

In the community, where unemployment is already rife, the handicapped have no chance at all. There are no welfare facilities so they are always dependent on their families.

The only source of income for the handicapped is often begging.

Wayquis Peru wants these young people to be able to lead lives worthy of human beings and therefore we are creating sheltered workshops where people with a handicap can learn and work.

The Objective

Wayquis Peru wants to teach handicapped young people skills so that they can earn their own incomes. Wayquis Peru wants to set up a sheltered workshop in which people with a handicap can learn a craft and receive an income.

Wayquis Peru wants to take into account the handicaps of the young people and where necessary adapt the work so that they can work under congenial conditions.

For the young people Wayquis Peru is a preparation for a job in daily life. Wayquis Peru teaches the young people to function in the community as independently as possible. Wayquis Peru is a step up into Peruvian society.
